Surgical Scar Removal Treatment

When we become injured, our wounds heal over time, but when scars form, it can serve as a permanent reminder.

Scars come in a variety of different forms, including raised or recessed, and may take a range of different colours or textures.

The appearance of scars may be unsightly, particularly when compared to the surrounding healthy skin. This can cause embarrassment or self consciousness when placed in particularly obvious parts of the body.

Each scar is unique, depending on how the injury was received, and the type of skin it formed on. It can also be difficult to discern how a scar may look, and while a poor healing process is sometimes a contributing factor to the appearance of severe scarring, this is not always the case.

Treatments

Removing scars

At The Devonshire Clinic, we can offer a range of scar treatment options to help minimise and reduce the appearance of scars. Even very large scars can be significantly reduced through treatment.

What to expect at your scar removal consultation

  • Your specialist will typically begin a consultation by examining any affected areas, taking your medical history and discussing your concerns in detail.
  • Your specialist will detail your treatment options to allow you to make an informed decision, taking care to explain the treatment process in detail.
  • Treatment can commence on the same day if preferred or you will have the option to rebook after considering the advice and treatment plan given.

Recommended Scar Removal Treatments

There are several effective ways in which our specialists minimise the appearance of scars and to improve the overall texture and condition of your skin.

Steroid injections

A raised scar such as a hypertrophic or keloid scar can be treated using many mini injections containing corticosteroids. These are placed in the scar to reduce inflammation and flatten the scar. Our consultants will repeat the infections every four weeks or so, monitoring the appearance of the scar.

You may require multiple scar treatments over several months to achieve the desired result.

Topical treatments

Silicone gel sheets – these are often used with pressure dressings but need to be in place for 12 hours a day. They are particularly good at preventing and reducing keloid and hypertrophic scars. Alternatively, silicone gels such as Kelocote® may be used. These are also very effective at reducing the appearance of hypertrophic and keloid scars.

Lasers

Our Consultant Dermatologists have access to many different types of laser, some of which can be used to reduce the appearance of scars whilst others are effective at reducing the redness associated with scars by targeting the small blood vessels around a scar.
Laser resurfacing is particularly effective for certain types of scars. The top layers of skin peel away and the laser acts on the dermis to stimulate collagen production. These two processes expand the tissues within the scar, raising it to the level of the surrounding skin.

Fractional lasers

A step up from traditional lasers, fractional lasers deliver the treatment in tiny fractions or pixels. This type of treatment can help to reduce scarring without as much disruption to your life because redness and peeling are much reduced afterwards.

Fillers

Dermal fillers can provide a temporary improvement in the appearance of pitted scars and repeat treatment is usually necessary and recommended.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels apply a substance to the skin that takes away the surface layer, revealing the fresh skin underneath. They can help to reduce the appearance of scarring.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is separate to microneedling. It involves a device which sends a fine stream of particles to gently erode skin cells which are then removed by a light air vacuum. It can help to rejuvenate the skin, removing damaged and dead skin cells, and to help reduce the appearance of scarring.

Microneedling

Our consultants can also use microneedling devices, which can also stimulate collagen production within the deeper layers of skin to help treat pitted scars.

Surgical scar revision

Plastic surgery techniques are sometimes required for patients with scars on the body due to trauma, burns, skin grafts or other surgery.
If the original wound site has healed forming a very obvious scar, it is sometimes possible to perform surgery to reopen the wound and then reclose it in a more favourable way.

Healing takes several weeks then several months of aftercare are required before the full final effect can be seen.

What does the treatment do?

At DSL Clinic, we offer surgical scar removal to help minimise the appearance of scars to look more in line with the healthier skin tone and texture.

As well as offering aesthetic improvement, reducing the appearance of scars can have a profound effect on the confidence and self-esteem of patients who seek treatment.

Surgical scar removal may be performed under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the size, area, and type of scar being treated.

The scar will not be removed completely, but managed as best as possible in order to make the scar look less obvious.

During the procedure, the scar is excised to achieve the most inconspicuous look possible. This can sometimes be over a course of multiple surgeries.

At DSL Clinic, we know that any decision to undergo surgical procedures is not a small one. This is why it is so important that all patients attend a thorough consultation with our consultant dermatologist, Dr Hiba Injibar, before any treatment takes place.

The consultation will allow Dr Injibar to fully understand your goals and aims as well as tailor a treatment solution to suit you. All this whilst managing your expectations and answering any queries you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions from our customers to help you find the
answers you’re looking for faster.
Scars come in a range of forms, but by and large can be defined into the most common categories. Hypertrophic scars are red, itchy, and continue to grow after the healing process is complete. They usually mature into pale, flat scars. Keloid scars are similar, but are more painful, and continue to grow and spread. Atrophic scars stretch and widen after healing, and depressed scars are scars that heal lower than the normal skin level.
Surgical scar removal is a day case, and patients should be mobile almost immediately after the procedure. However, it is incredibly important for the healing process that Dr Injibar’s aftercare advice is followed exactly for optimal results. This includes keeping the area clean, dry, and free from infection. Patients should prepare for around a week away from work, or their usual daily routine for a week, and refrain from strenuous physical activity or exercise for 6 weeks post-procedure.
As with any surgical procedure, surgical scar removal carries the risk of complications and side effects, including moderate pain or discomfort for around 5 days after the procedure. During your consultation, Dr Injibar will ensure you fully understand the associated risks and downfalls to this treatment.

A: Laser treatment is usually permanent for acne scars, but more scarring can occur where new acne spots develop in the future. That’s why it’s essential to maintain good control of your acne to avoid further scarring. By carefully following the advice of your consultant dermatologist at The Devonshire Clinic, you’ll get the best possible results.

A: Yes, laser treatment for acne scarring can be used on other areas of your body, such as your back, chest, and shoulders, as well as your face. The treatment works best on shallow scars or scars of medium depth. For deeper scars, you might need surgery (known as subcision) and/or dermal fillers.

Laser treatment can reduce the appearance of acne scars, making a noticeable difference over time, and it’s excellent for treating mild to moderate scarring. Unfortunately, severe scarring caused by acne never completely disappears.

You’ll be able to discuss your treatment, including the results you want to achieve, during your first appointment with your consultant dermatologist at The Devonshire Clinic. They’ll be able to tell you how much the acne has damaged your skin and what results you can expect. For example, they might advise you to have more than one type of therapy to get the best results.

Yes. Although laser treatment can make your acne scars less noticeable, it won’t be able to make them disappear forever. You might be offered a combination of treatments to achieve the best results.
